On sabbatical at NESCent!

After many months of blogging hiatus, I am planning to get back in the groove over the next few months. Starting this week, I am a sabbatical scholar at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent) in Durham, North Carolina. I'll be here through July, 2010. My major project will be to write a semi-popular book on the origin and evolution of sex. This will also be a great opportunity for me to recharge my batteries and to tie up some loose ends that have been accumulating.

I plan to use this blog venue to sketch some ideas that might end up in my book, so I hope that I'll be able to re-gain (or perhaps newly gain) your attention and comments! Stay tuned...

P.S. I'm twittering @johnlogsdon

  1. Do you know yet just what "semi-popular" will cover? Sounds like something for me: more than a layman, less than a professional. Sort of a biology buff.

  2. Yes, John. I'm shooting for "popular" appeal with solid scientific content. My "models" include Sean Carroll, Neil Shubin, Richard Dawkins, Olivia Judson, Carl Zimmer, and many others. This genre might be a small and difficult target to hit, but I am hopeful that the sexy topic will make it possible.

  4. If you figure out what Twittering is for, will you please let me know? I still don't get it ;).

  5. Kent: I basically use Twitter to publish my status updates that also appear on Facebook. It's a bit vain sometimes, for sure.

  6. This can't mean... microbial eukaryotes might actually make it to popular science??? =DDD

And not as "those lower intermediate lifeforms" either?

Will there be any citing of TC-S' intricate hypotheses in this 'semi-popular' book? That would be truly epic...

And welcome back! I first came across this blog after the extended hiatus began, and was rather disappointed with the lack of updates... but all is good now.

    Cheers,
